AI-generated content gains momentum, but its appeal remains unclear.
The recent surge in Large Language Model (LLM) generated content has left many wondering about its value. As we reported on May 3, LLMs are poised to fundamentally change software engineering, but the question remains: why would consumers want to engage with LLM generated novels, music, or images? The significant resources being invested in this industry suggest there must be a compelling reason.
The skepticism is understandable, given the limitations of LLMs. For instance, LLM-generated passwords have been shown to be vulnerable to cracking, despite appearing strong. Moreover, the style of LLM-generated content can be formulaic and lacking in creativity. However, proponents of LLMs argue that they can still produce useful and innovative outputs, such as helping to accelerate scientific breakthroughs or generating helpful tools like the LLM-reader library on GitHub.
As the LLM industry continues to evolve, it will be important to watch how consumers respond to LLM generated content. Will they embrace the unique characteristics of LLM-generated art and entertainment, or will they prefer traditional, human-created works? The answer to this question will ultimately determine the success of the significant investments being made in LLM technology.
