Anthropic’s March 2026 Economic Index shows that seasoned users of its Claude chatbot are pulling ahead, achieving a 10 percent higher task‑success rate than newcomers. The study, which surveyed millions of interactions worldwide, found that people who have spent at least six months with Claude complete 73.1 percent of their requests successfully, versus 66.7 percent for users under that threshold. Veteran users also generate almost half of all Claude‑driven work (48.9 percent), submit fewer personal‑style prompts and craft noticeably more complex queries.
The gap matters because it signals that the benefits of generative AI are increasingly tied to user expertise. “Learning‑by‑doing” appears to be the dominant driver: seasoned users have honed prompting techniques, task‑structuring habits and an intuition for Claude’s strengths and limits. As a result, productivity gains and cost savings accrue disproportionately to early adopters and firms that invest in upskilling, while casual users see modest improvements. The widening proficiency divide could reinforce existing economic inequalities, a concern Anthropic flagged alongside the data.
