Largest PC gaming mod site takes a stand on AI

Nexus Mods, the largest PC gaming modding site, now requires creators to disclose any AI use when uploading new mods.
Nexus Mods, the largest repository for PC‑gaming modifications, announced today that every new upload must include a disclosure stating whether artificial‑intelligence tools were used in its creation. The policy will also make AI tags more prominent on mod pages and supplement existing “AI‑generated” or “AI‑assisted” labels with clearer accessibility information.
The move does not ban AI‑generated content outright. Nexus Mods said it supports human creativity and recognises that AI is already employed for tasks such as script autocompletion, texture synthesis, voice generation and even full‑asset creation. However, mods may be removed if the platform receives a credible complaint from an affected creator or rights holder.
The requirement matters because modding has long been a community‑driven, largely unregulated space where the line between human and machine contribution has been blurry. By mandating disclosure, Nexus Mods aims to give users clearer expectations about the origins of the content they download, protect intellectual‑property owners, and address growing concerns about AI‑generated assets flooding creative ecosystems. The policy also aligns with a wave of industry initiatives that seek to give creators more control over how their work is used for AI training, as seen in recent efforts to simplify website opt‑out signals and to standardise AI‑training preferences.
What to watch next is how the modding community reacts. Moderators will need to enforce the new tags and handle complaints, while developers of popular games may monitor whether AI‑enhanced mods affect balance or security. If the approach proves effective, other mod platforms or digital distribution services could adopt similar disclosure rules, further shaping the relationship between AI tools and user‑generated content in gaming.
