Palantir AI tech, scarcely used by 29 NHS trusts, still delivered benefits

Palantir's AI, said to be unused or barely used by 29 NHS trusts, is claimed to be delivering benefits, a gap the health department calls misleading.
The Guardian has revealed that 29 NHS trusts listed by NHS England as “realising benefits” from Palantir’s AI‑powered medical data platform are in fact using little or none of the technology. Freedom of Information responses show a substantial gap between the NHS’s public claim and the trusts’ own comments, a discrepancy senior health officials described as “very misleading”.
The investigation also found that many trusts have rejected Palantir’s patient‑data system outright, and a separate analysis by campaign group Foxglove indicates that nearly a third of the trusts that have adopted the platform are now performing fewer patient procedures than before it went live. One trust, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, accounted for the bulk of that decline.
The story matters because it calls into question the value of high‑profile AI contracts in the public health sector. If a flagship AI platform is under‑utilised or linked to reduced clinical activity, taxpayers may be paying for technology that does not deliver the promised efficiency or care improvements. The findings also highlight broader challenges around procurement transparency, data governance and the realistic integration of AI tools in complex hospital environments.
Going forward, NHS England is likely to face pressure for a detailed audit of the Palantir rollout and may be asked to justify continued spending on the platform. Watch for official responses from senior health officials, possible parliamentary scrutiny of AI contracts, and any corrective steps Palantir proposes to increase adoption or demonstrate measurable clinical benefits.
