Canva has introduced Craft, its first AI image‑generation model trained on human‑designed templates, now available to all users and slated for integration with third‑party chatbots.
Canva has unveiled its first in‑house image‑generation model, Craft, marking the design platform’s entry into the competitive AI‑art space dominated by Google, OpenAI, ByteDance and Meta. Developed by Canva’s own research team, Craft is distinctively trained on the company’s extensive library of human‑designed templates—posters, social posts, infographics, menus and typography‑rich layouts—rather than the photograph‑heavy datasets that power most rival models.
The model is immediately available to all Canva users worldwide and can produce images up to 2,048 pixels in resolution across more than 30 aspect ratios. Canva highlights improved text rendering, a long‑standing pain point for generative models, and says the system can “plan” a design before rendering it, leveraging its template‑centric training. A further rollout will enable third‑party chatbots to call Craft via an API, opening the model to external developers and conversational‑AI products.
The launch matters because it gives Canva a proprietary foundation model tailored to design workflows, potentially lowering reliance on external APIs and giving the platform a differentiated edge in speed and visual fidelity. By making the tool free for all users, Canva also accelerates the democratization of AI‑assisted design, which could reshape how marketers, small businesses and creators produce visual content.
Watch for adoption metrics and user feedback in the coming weeks, as well as the performance of Craft against established models in benchmark tests. The upcoming chatbot integration will be a key test of Canva’s ecosystem strategy, and could signal broader moves toward AI‑powered design assistants across the SaaS landscape.
