Researchers unveil unsupervised tool evolution that lets coding agents retain and refine data discovery, cleaning and joining across analytics queries in a data lake.
A new framework called TEAL (Tool Evolution for Analytics over Data Lakes) promises to make coding agents far more efficient when answering analytical queries across massive data repositories.
Current agents can discover, clean and join the right tables to answer a question, but they discard that work once the query is solved and start from scratch on the next request. TEAL tackles this redundancy by automatically building a reusable library of data‑analysis tools and the skills to apply them, all without needing ground‑truth answers for training.
The system pairs two complementary agents with a fixed “Worker” agent that actually writes the analysis code. An Explorer scours the data lake itself, proposing raw tools such as extraction scripts or join operators. A Critic watches the Worker’s execution traces on a set of training questions and refines or adds tools based on the observed trajectories. A Skill Writer then updates the usage patterns for the evolving toolbox, while a verification step checks that the new tools improve performance within tight step budgets.
By learning from both data‑driven evidence and the Worker’s own behavior, TEAL boosts accuracy and cuts the number of steps required for each new query. The unsupervised approach sidesteps the costly need for labeled answers, a long‑standing bottleneck in agentic data analysis.
The development follows a wave of research into more autonomous agents, such as spatial‑reasoning coders and long‑horizon memory mechanisms. Industry observers will be watching whether TEAL can be integrated into existing analytics platforms, how it scales to ever larger lakes, and whether similar unsupervised tool‑evolution techniques will spread to other domains beyond data analysis.
