Replit will now use OpenAI as its default model provider, replacing Anthropic, while still offering Claude to users.
Replit has announced that OpenAI’s ChatGPT will become the default AI model for its platform, replacing Anthropic’s Claude. CEO Amjad Masad clarified the change over the weekend, noting that the move was driven by a mix of cost considerations, performance benchmarks and a new strategic partnership with OpenAI. Existing users will still be able to select Claude manually, but the default setting will now point to OpenAI’s offering.
The shift marks a concrete follow‑up to the breakup announced on Oct 17, when Replit said it was ending its work with Anthropic. By making OpenAI the primary provider, Replit aims to curb spending on Anthropic licences while capitalising on the perceived superior efficiency of ChatGPT for its coding‑assistant features. Masad also highlighted that enterprise contracts have grown sharply, climbing from roughly 2 % to 15 % of revenue, and that more than half of the company’s income now comes from B2B customers. Those dynamics suggest the platform is leaning into higher‑margin, business‑focused services where model cost and speed are critical.
The decision matters for several reasons. For Anthropic, losing a default slot on a popular developer platform could dent its revenue stream and signal broader competitive pressure from OpenAI. For Replit, the partnership may deepen its integration with OpenAI’s ecosystem, potentially unlocking new product features and pricing models that appeal to enterprise developers. The move also underscores the growing importance of cost‑performance trade‑offs in the rapidly consolidating AI‑model market.
Going forward, observers will watch how Anthropic responds—whether through revised pricing, new collaborations or technical upgrades—and whether Replit’s B2B growth sustains the shift. Further details on the partnership terms and any impact on Replit’s pricing structure are likely to emerge in the weeks ahead.
