ChatGPT's Chrome extension now can view your open browser tabs, allowing the AI to reference them when you tag Chrome in the web or desktop app.
OpenAI has rolled out a new capability for its ChatGPT Chrome extension that lets the chatbot read the web pages you already have open. The update, announced alongside the retirement of the Atlas browser, adds a “tag Chrome” command that can be used in the ChatGPT web or desktop app. When the extension is installed, users can ask the model to compare the contents of multiple tabs, pull information from a highlighted passage, or even analyse a YouTube video without leaving the chat window. A demo video shows the assistant summarising three sofa‑shopping tabs side‑by‑side, illustrating how the feature brings the current browsing context directly into the conversation.
The change deepens the integration between ChatGPT and everyday browsing tools, promising smoother workflows for research, shopping and content creation. At the same time, it raises fresh privacy questions: the model now has direct access to the URLs, titles and visible text of any open tab, potentially exposing sensitive data if permissions are mis‑managed. OpenAI says the feature works on all plans and can be toggled in the extension’s settings, but the ease of “just tag Chrome” may encourage users to grant broader access than they intend.
What to watch next are the controls OpenAI will put in place to limit inadvertent data sharing, and how regulators and privacy advocates respond to a chatbot that can silently scan a user’s browsing session. Competitors may follow suit, turning tab‑reading into a new battleground for AI‑enhanced productivity tools. Keep an eye on updates to the permission UI and any statements from consumer‑privacy groups in the coming weeks.
