Google DeepMind and Google Cloud will grant up to 200 European researchers access to frontier AI capabilities.
Google DeepMind and Alphabet’s cloud arm have announced a programme that will give up to 200 leading European scientists direct access to the company’s most advanced AI models, together with $3 million in compute credits. The pledge, unveiled on Tuesday, bundles the models with a suite of specialised tools – AlphaFold 3 for protein‑structure prediction, WeatherNext for climate forecasting, AlphaGenome and AlphaEvolve for genomics research, and AlphaEarth Foundations for Earth‑system modelling.
The move is intended to accelerate scientific discovery across the continent by lowering the barrier to cutting‑edge AI. By handing researchers the same infrastructure that powers Google’s internal projects, the initiative could speed breakthroughs in health, climate and biodiversity at a time when Europe is seeking to build a sovereign AI ecosystem. It also signals Google’s willingness to cooperate with EU research priorities, a contrast to the more guarded approaches of some U.S. rivals.
What will follow is the selection process for the 200 participants and the terms governing data use and ethical oversight. Observers will watch how quickly the granted compute credits translate into published results, and whether the programme spurs other cloud providers to launch comparable offers. Regulators may also scrutinise the partnership for compliance with the EU’s AI Act, especially given the powerful capabilities of the models involved. The rollout will be a litmus test for how effectively private AI leaders can bolster public research while navigating Europe’s emerging AI policy landscape.
