Flat-rate AI subscriptions conceal a usage limit that determines how much work can be processed before the service stops.
OpenAI has reshuffled its ChatGPT Pro subscriptions, slashing the usage allowance on the $200 tier and adding a premium $500 option. The company announced on 2 October that the newly introduced Pro 500 plan bundles “Ultrafast GPT‑6 Astra” with a higher price tag, while the existing $200 plan sees its quota cut from the former “20× Plus” level to “10×.” The change was first hinted at in the 29 September release notes, which said the reopened $200 plan would “net out at half the old plan’s dollar value in API spend.”
The adjustment matters because the $200 tier was marketed as “unlimited” usage, a promise that now carries a hidden ceiling. Developers who signed up for the “Pro 20x” plan expected unrestricted access, but hard daily and weekly limits have appeared, effectively halving the amount of work the model can process before the meter stops. For many, the reduced quota translates into a higher effective cost per token, prompting criticism from the developer community and raising questions about the value of flat‑rate AI subscriptions.
What to watch next is how OpenAI will address the backlash and whether it will further refine its tiered pricing or revert to more transparent usage caps. Competitors such as Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Gemini agents are already positioning themselves as alternatives for heavy‑use developers, so shifts in OpenAI’s pricing could accelerate migration to rival platforms. Additionally, any updates to OpenAI’s API pricing or the rollout of the Ultrafast GPT‑6 model will be closely monitored, as they will determine whether the new $500 tier can justify its premium or if the market will demand a more balanced middle ground.
