Google launched a new website that lets users verify whether images, videos or audio clips were generated by AI.
Google rolled out a new public portal on Tuesday that lets anyone check whether an image, video or audio clip was created with the company’s generative‑AI tools. The site, branded as the SynthID Detector, builds on the SynthID watermarking system Google introduced in 2023. That system embeds an invisible signal in every piece of media produced by the firm’s models – Nano Banana, Veo and Lyria – as well as by generation‑capable tools such as Gemini, Flow, Producer AI and Vids. The detector scans a file for the hidden mark and reports if the content originated from Google’s AI pipeline.
The launch matters because AI‑generated media are increasingly realistic and easy to distribute, raising concerns over misinformation, deepfakes and the erosion of trust in online content. By offering a free, easy‑to‑use verification tool, Google aims to give users a clear signal about the provenance of what they see and hear, supporting transparency in a market where other providers are also racing to embed traceability into their outputs.
What to watch next is how widely the detector is adopted and whether it becomes a de‑facto standard for AI‑content verification. Regulators in the EU and Nordic states have signalled interest in mandatory labeling of synthetic media, so Google’s move could shape future policy. Equally important will be the response from competing AI firms – whether they adopt similar watermarking, and how quickly adversaries develop techniques to strip or spoof the marks. The effectiveness of SynthID in real‑world detection and its integration into browsers or social platforms will determine how much it can curb the spread of undisclosed AI‑generated content.
