Spirit AI, a Beijing‑based “robot brain” startup, told Reuters that its humanoid‑robot software could reach a ChatGPT‑style breakthrough as early as mid‑2027. The company’s co‑founder and chief scientist, Gao Yang, said the “brain is indeed the weakest link in the complete robotics stack,” and that the industry is hunting for a “ChatGPT moment” that would let robots follow verbal instructions to perform most general‑purpose tasks.
The forecast comes after a series of hardware milestones that have let Chinese humanoids sprint, dance and execute backflips on command. Spirit AI already has tens of its Moz1 wheeled humanoids operating on production lines for battery maker CATL and retailer JD.com, the latter also an investor. Yet Gao warned that scaling the software to consumer‑grade robots will be hampered by a data bottleneck, pushing realistic home deployment back by at least eight years.
