A study of US and UK data finds products displayed in Google’s AI Mode are priced on average 21.6% higher than in traditional search results.
A new analysis of Google’s AI‑driven shopping interface shows that it routinely surfaces pricier options than the company’s traditional search results. The study, conducted by the tracking firm Productrise, examined roughly two million product listings across the United States and the United Kingdom. When the same item appeared in both the AI Mode and the regular search carousel, the AI‑mode price was on average 21.6 % higher.
The research also highlighted a striking lack of overlap between the two surfaces. Only 1.28 % of the products displayed in AI Mode matched those in the conventional “Popular products” carousel, and the top‑ranked seller differed in nearly half of those cases (49.6 %). The findings raise questions about the promise of AI‑enhanced shopping, which has been marketed as a way to streamline discovery and cut costs.
If consumers are being steered toward more expensive listings, the implications extend beyond individual wallets. Advertisers and merchants may see a shift in traffic toward higher‑priced partners, while regulators could scrutinise whether the algorithmic curation inadvertently favours certain sellers. For Google, the data could pressure the firm to clarify how AI Mode selects and ranks products, especially as the feature becomes a more prominent entry point for e‑commerce queries.
Going forward, observers will watch for Google’s response—whether it adjusts the ranking logic, adds price‑transparency cues, or releases further data to address the disparity. Parallel studies on other platforms’ AI shopping tools could also emerge, offering a broader view of how generative search is reshaping online retail pricing.
