Instagram is cracking down on AI accounts masquerading as humans, renaming its “AI creator” label to “AI‑generated profile” to clearly flag synthetic personas.
Instagram is moving to curb the surge of synthetic influencers that masquerade as real people. The platform will now hunt down accounts that feature AI‑generated personas but do not carry a clear disclosure, and it will throttle their reach in the feed, Reels and the Explore tab. To make the distinction unmistakable, Instagram is renaming its existing “AI creator” tag to “AI‑generated profile,” a label that must appear on any account presenting an artificial human.
The change follows growing concerns that AI‑driven avatars are blurring the line between authentic and fabricated content, complicating users’ ability to assess credibility and potentially skewing engagement metrics. By demoting undisclosed synthetic accounts, Instagram aims to protect the integrity of its discovery engine and give users a transparent signal about the nature of the profiles they encounter.
As we reported on 31 August, the company had already signalled a reduction in reach for AI‑generated personas that failed to self‑label. The latest rollout adds a mandatory label rename and a concrete enforcement mechanism: accounts without the “AI‑generated profile” badge will see their posts excluded from non‑follower recommendation streams, effectively cutting off the primary growth channel for such accounts.
What to watch next is how creators and brands respond. Expect a wave of compliance updates as influencers retrofit their profiles with the new badge, and possible pushback from developers of AI avatars who may argue that the policy hampers creative expression. Regulators in the EU and Nordic region are also monitoring the broader implications of synthetic media on consumer protection, so future guidance or legislative action could shape how social platforms police AI‑generated content.
