Hugging Face unveiled the Microduck on Thursday, a 25‑centimetre‑tall, duck‑shaped robot priced at $399 and slated to ship before Christmas. The device, described by CEO Clem Delangue as an “open‑source robot you can teach new tricks with reinforcement learning,” combines a playful form factor with a fully accessible software stack.
Microduck can waddle, crouch, roll‑skate and pick up objects with its beak – up to 800 grams – and it can right itself after a fall. Under the hood are 15 small motors and a 50 Hz onboard policy loop that runs reinforcement‑learning policies trained with MuJoCo PPO. The robot’s code is released under an open‑source licence, mirroring the approach Hugging Face took with its earlier Reachy Mini platform, allowing developers and hobbyists to retrain the duck for custom behaviours.
